Reshape and Restore Guide

At Hatharvest, we take great pride in the craftsmanship of our hats. However, because our hats are made from natural and high-quality materials like wool felt and genuine straw, they may occasionally lose their shape due to improper storage, moisture, or transit.

The good news is that most quality hats can be easily restored to their original glory at home. Follow this guide to keep your Hatharvest hat looking its best.

1. Reshaping Wool Felt Hats

Wool felt is durable and pliable when exposed to steam.

  • The Steam Method: Use a garment steamer or a tea kettle. Gently steam the area of the hat that is misshapen until the felt feels soft and warm.

  • Hand Shaping: Once the felt is pliable, use your hands to push the dents out or reshape the brim.

  • Cooling: Hold the hat in the desired shape for a few moments as it cools. Place it on a flat surface or a hat stand to dry completely.

  • Caution: Never get the hat soaking wet; only use the vapor from the steam.

2. Reshaping Straw & Panama Hats

Straw can become brittle if too dry or warped if it gets crushed.

  • Light Moisture: Use a spray bottle to very lightly mist the area with water, or use a steamer at a distance. The straw should feel slightly damp, not wet.

  • Forming: Gently work the straw back into its original shape. For brims that are turned up or down, you can use a heavy, flat object (like a clean book) to press the brim flat while it dries.

  • The Iron Method: For stubborn brim edges, you can use an iron on the lowest heat setting with a clean cloth placed between the iron and the straw. Never touch the iron directly to the straw.

3. Fixing a Droopy Brim

If the brim of your Western or Fedora hat has lost its "snap":

  • Steam the entire circumference of the brim.

  • Lay the hat upside down on its crown on a clean, flat surface.

  • Ensure the brim is positioned exactly how you want it to set and let it air dry away from direct sunlight or heaters.

4. Proper Storage to Prevent Warping

To avoid having to reshape your hat frequently:

  • Store Upside Down: Store your hat on its crown (upside down) or on a dedicated hat stand. Storing it flat on its brim for long periods will cause the brim to flatten or droop.

  • Avoid Heat: Never leave your hat in a hot car, as the heat can shrink the sweatband and warp the material.
